| As I look out of my dusty, cool window, I search the skies for meaning
and answers. There aren't any definitive answers, as far as I can see, to
anything. The only thing that I can completely understand is that I am such
a miniscule element in a much larger scheme of things, as we typically say.
I learned an amazing lesson during the summer of 2001. The millennium, a
time to reflect on our history and scrutinize our place in the future. I
discovered that Earth, our home, is one planet in a universe. Our universe
is one universe in a galaxy named the Milky Way. Our galaxy is a spiral
galaxy. A spiral galaxy is one of three types of galaxies. Those are irregular,
spiral, and elliptical. The degree in which our universe and our galaxies
extend into outer space is unknown. To imagine and be humbled by the fact
that we, as human beings, are such a minute aspect in such a colossal creation
is baffling. One morning, one cool morning, I wrapped myself in two layers
of clothes to go outside and marvel over an amazing meteor shower. I concentrated
my gaze to the south and over time realized that the meteors were coming
out of every direction and speckled the entire early morning sky. Just as
I would turn away five or six would shoot through the sky as fast as lightning.
They were leaving trails of white in the sky as their long, extended lives
withered away through extreme heat. Melissa |

As far back as I can remember I have been wishing upon stars. Each night faithfully as long as the stars are shining, I recite to myself the childhood poem I recited as a child: Star light star bright First star I see tonight I wish I may, I wish I might Have my wish I wish tonight Most people see it as a silly childhood fantasy dream that I have never been able to let go and still live within. Well, why should I let that childhood dream go? Why should any of us? We all need dreams in our lives and silly superstitions to cling onto. Without hopes and dreams, we would no longer exist as our own individual and just become a monotonous model of an existing society. Who knows, maybe one day my wish will come true. They do say if you were to travel to your star it would take seven years to get there and seven years to get back. Fourteen years is not so long to wait. As they say, patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved to look at the stars. Every night she would take her dog outside to look at the bright stars in the sky. She thought to herself how cool it would be to reach out and touch one. She knew this could not happen because they were too far away. So instead she would just enjoy looking up at them and using her imagination to make up fascinating stories on how they came to be. One night she saw a group of stars in the sky. After using her imagination she thought she saw a big pot with a long handle on it. When she told her parents about what she had seen they told her that is was called the Big Dipper, this is how she came to love astronomy.

STARS By Maria Genna In Dedication to All of the Victims and Heroes of September 11, 2001 Why is the subject of stars so intriguing? Is it the mystical element of astrological influence on our lives? Could it be the unique beauty of each, or the patterns of many in the night sky-or perhaps, their practical purpose of navigation? To you or I, it may be one or more of these components that lends itself to our attraction to the subject. Whichever it may be, we are not alone; people from all walks of life find themselves drawn to this topic. Stargazing is an age-old activity. For centuries people have engaged in the practice of observation and study of these phenomenal heavenly bodies. For many, it becomes a serious hobby-leading the hobbyist to invest in expensive equipment for the purpose of viewing these numinous celestial masses. Something else that comes to mind when contemplating the intrigue of stars is that people associate the "star" with that which is good. It stands as confirmation of achievement to the youngest child who brings home his/her schoolwork proudly displaying a shiny gold star, as well as to one of the highest levels of recognition to actors as he/she is honored with the placement of a star in his/her name on the illustrious Hollywood Walk-of-Fame. The positive correlations connected to the star are numerous. We as Americans stand in affirmation of this notion every time we salute Old Glory. It's no coincidence that Americans chose the star as a symbolic representation of its United States. The stars on our flag are a declaration to all that our country stands united with undying strength, fortitude, hope, and optimism. "Stars and stripes forever!"
