Return to the Virtual Schoolhouse

What?

......The Virtual Schoolhouse is an interactive web site for educators, students and their families. Internet users within any community will be able to step inside as well as contribute to our classroom. Educational activities, links to instructional web sites, sample lessons, curriculum guides and dates of upcoming educational events in our district will be included in our Virtual Schoolhouse. We hope that this will increase the parental involvement of our students. In today's society, with an increase of single parent families and/or both parents working, it is hard for parents to be actively involved in their child's schooling. By having virtual classrooms, they will be able to access important information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For any questions or comments, please email either Ms. Bilz, Ms. Knatz or Mrs. Moloney.

Why?

......Our web site will open as a main home page introducing ourselves and our purpose, which is to given educators, students and parents. This will give the parents, students and other educators an insight to our classroom. On this page, there will be links to our individual classrooms. People entering the site will be able to direct themselves to the appropriate grade level to find the desired information. The grades will include elementary and middle school, and focus on regular as well as special education. The information provided will include New York State Learning Standards, daily schedules, lesson plans, school calendars and other educational resources. The lesson plans will be cross-curricular and include various modes of learning and teaching techniques.

How?

......We plan to have this project linked to events and activities indefinitely from the time that we get it up and running. We will work cooperatively with each other to make sure our visions and goals remain on task. We are going to start with making our main page and then branching off to our individual classrooms. We are also going to have common pages, such as the lesson plans page and educational links page. We will be using Dreamweaver to create our webpage and Flash to create and edit movies.

Who?

......Lara Bilz, Kristen Knatz and Nancy Maloney are the collaborators in this group. This project is a collaborative effort that first needs to be broken down into individual tasks. We will be responsible for the implementation of the main page, the actual layout and design, as well as pages that our classrooms share. These pages include the sample lesson plans, parental resources and various educational links. We will each work on our own “classroom”, relating to our subject and grade area, while focusing on a New York State Standards.

How Assessed?

......There are numerous ways we are able to assess our site and its success. We have a hits button which tells us how many times the site has been accessed. This way, we are able to tell if people are physically reaching us. We have a comments section on our site, where visitors can e-mail us with their thoughts and any problems that they may encountered while viewing the Virtual Schoolhouse. These comments will allow us to better serve our viewers and constantly maintain our site. We have also recently added an online survey. Viewers will be able to answer various questions pertaining to our site so we can better serve them.

When?

......Our collaborative group will be an ongoing process and will follow us through our educational career. Each year we will have a new class, therefore we will need to update our class information annually. Also, we will be continually updating new information regarding district events, new educational links found, and newly taught lesson plans. We will each be responsible for this "upkeep", and stay in contact with one another regarding any changes that we will make in the pages we have in common. As of now, the foundation for the Virtual Schoolhouse has been set. Currently the site has up-to-date information for the this school year. By the end of next semester, Virtual Schoolhouse will have one full school year of academic information available for all to see.
