School Day

• When does your school day start?

Well, if you were going to school in Westbury in 1857, you would start at 9:00 AM and leave at 3:00 PM.

• How does your school day begin?

Reading a chapter of the Bible and a prayer by your teacher.

• Then what?

Lunch period lasted for one half hour. You could walk home and bring a bag lunch. A typical lunch was a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and hopefully a homemade snack! There was no cafeteria so you would eat in your classroom or under the shade of a tree.

• Reading, Writing, Arithmetic. Wait there's more!

What's your chore?

Wash slateboards, put out the fire in the stove properly, bring in water from the outside well, mop the floor, tidy the outdoor bathrooms, wash the windows or ring the school bell? All must be done before you can leave.

For every chore you need...

Bucket, broom, newspaper, shovel, sponge, paper, mop & smiling face...
