Notes from the
International Video Conference
United Nations Sept 17, 2004
in preparation for the
International Day of Peace, September 21, 2004

Sports
Theme of 2004 International Day of Peace
Ideal theme for online, interactive collaborative/competitive, multi-cultural projects, activities.  (#1)

6-way
video
conference

Students in:
      Afghanistan
      Kosovo
      Sierra Leone
      NYC
Organizers in:
       Athens, Greece
       Toronto, Canada

Follow-up Agenda      This review of the video conference at the UN is written from the perspective of the Fashion Portal

Video layout
configuration
The logistics for this conference:
> Audience=150/500(?), Screen=10'x15'(?)
>
I'm guessing 24fps or 15fps streaming video (semi-professional) i.e., this is doable on the cheap in classrooms in a reasonable time (2-years? ubiquitous in 5 years?)
Half-duplex presently (I believe); it may have been directed in control-room.
> Kids love to hear their country's name on TV - national cheer for sierra leone, when the flag goes by or when a US student from Sierra Leone speaks. Use this.  print a booklet ($18 total budget?) with UN logo and names of students in Afghanistan, SL, Kosovo, Greece, Canada, US.
(Like Chinese Polaroid, they'll become inspirational keepsakes.)

In the video conferencing system used at the UN, the window locations remained constant, but the contents (country)rotated.  I would use fixed window/country, i.e. window 1 = sierra leone, window 2 = afghanistan, window 2.5 = US, etc.
Main window will duplicate one little window.
Country titles above/below window
I would US in little window,
There must be standard template configs for 5, 6, 7, 8, etc.
> What today is professional and semi-professional live streaming audio/video , will become semi-professional and home-version in the next 18 months (move down a notch).  Work with the technology that is coming if possible.  (Monica/Faye/BES/MMB/PI)
> Can we get a real grant to do a "professional pilot" of CtCP and multiplex CtCPs (like the 6-way video conference)?  (Faye)

video
logistics
How did Afghanistan, Kosovo and Sierra Leone et al, afford the equipment?
Were these special international schools?
Might such equipment be available elsewhere?
Could local Metro nyc schools use UN facilities - associated with NGO sponsored initiatives (Magenta/Pumped, etc)(Faye/PI)

Curriculum

Internet cyber sport competition between classrooms (Curriculum collab)
(#1) When creating teams for competitive collaborations (i.e. online portal challenges) divide teams occasionally, boys/girls, light/dark hair, A-M / N-Z, besides Americans/Romanians
Sport and gaming (International languages)
Classroom olympics (borrowing the events from the 2004 olympics)
What will be the measurement criteria for scoring , advancing, winning?
(Intellectual challenges?  peace/environment initiatives )
The video conference at the UN today was not meant to be constructivist PBL activity.
Adapt interactive collaboration for "Phys Ed" classes (on line competitive sport)
1-to-1 collaborative activities essential  (need not always be video)

Video
Production

> Who is in charge of the technical Video Conference connection (UN Public Information office)?  (Monica/PI)
> Who arranged logistics? who coordinated the technical details? who coordinated the event? (Monica/PI)
> What equipment was involved with this video telecast? (PI)
> Cost $ ? (PI)
> Faye remembers it being better in the past (PI)
> Limits? (PI)
> Can Magenta/Pumped-Up, etc.   use UN resources for pilot (take the Fashion Portal "upscale")? ** (Monica/PI)
> Where in Kosovo, where in Afghanistan, where in SL were "classrooms"?
> Is this the work of UN PI?  (Faye)
> Future video portals will need wide angle view of classroom by default.
Perhaps students can come up to camera/mike when wanting to speak directly to another student.

Issues
Other Projects

Why English (as on Kosovo Sport presentation with language translation)?
Language will be an issue   (curriculum collaboration)
What language will Sudan/Austrian Portal speak? (curriculum collab)

Maybe the UN can be the caretaker, host of the private educational network - secure  - that I wrote (monica, PI)
Fashion Portal
Can HHH and Romanian HS (shop classes?) build peace poles to exchange?
Invite them into the FP project peripherally as others. (curriculum collab)

Invite Romanian-American children to play a special role (language? culture!) (curriculum collab)
Video portals should be wide angle view of classroom by default.
Perhaps students can come up to camera/mike when wanting to speak directly to another student. (Default sound will be busy constructivist students).   (curriculum collab)
