Week Three Topic:

In what ways could digital photography be better used in K-12 education.

> Digital photography provides "instant" feedback to students. It is its own reward system. It could affect the self-esteem of some students if digital photography were used more cleverly.
>
Digital Photography could be used throughout the school year to document class activities for a "Class Scrapbook" or "Class Yearbook"
>
Digital (and other) photography could be used to decorate the walls of the school with the students' own work.
>
Digital photography could be used to capture a complete blackboard full of information before it is erased. (like taking a computer screen snapshot)
>
Digital photography with a in-class web camera could monitor activity.

What are some creative ways that teachers might use photography to inspire students? > Photo journalism to document an event, or other school activity. Like video documentary and Newsletters, this is a project that can be tacked on to almost any other project with children of any age working on projects of any discipline. The selection of specific grades and children should be made carefully. The older children will be mentoring; the younger children will be apprenticing.
> Entice parent participation by inviting them to join the class photography projects; each will get a digital camera.
> Create a Class Photo Gallery - based on a assigned theme. i.e.:
- - - awnings, windows, hub caps, stoops, railings,
- - - doorways, manhole covers, license plates, automobile tail lights, etc
- - - Street signs, store signs, pretty letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, .....1, 2, 3, 4, ?, &, +, etc.
- - - See nature and objects close up - write a poem to go along with your picture
- - - see "similar" things, patterns, colors,
> Students will be inspired if they get immediate feedback of their work in the field. They will be inspired when they see one (or more) of their beautiful photographs included in the Class Photo Gallery, and perhaps hanging on the hallway wall.
> The photography targets that will be shot will depend on the subjects being covered in class. These targets should "accidentally" reinforce other discuplines - mathematics, language arts, science, etc.

Include a description of the lesson plan that you have submitted this week.hy be better used in K-12 education.

> The lesson plan was created for 2 mixed age groups to go out of the classroom together for a Photography field trip. The 5th graders - and as many of their parents who want to come - will take the pictures and submit their best to the collected class photo gallery.
> The older children (12th graders) will document this entire project with Video and still pictures. (a GLEF-like project) The stills will be made into a slide show and together with the editted video, presented to the school assembly, administration, state officials (grant givers), etc.
> The high school (HS) students will play a mentoring role with the elementary school (ES) students. One from each group will be part of the project management - tracking, expenses, schedules, tasks, completions, etc.
> A mix of ES and HS students will work on a Class Newsletter to be sent to the homes of each student (and any relatives, that the parents/guardians would like it sent to.) The Newsletter will contain some examples of the childrens' work. It will serve as a vehicle to keep the class parents involved in class activities. Hopefully it will grow into a more exploitable tool.
